Ngamba Island – the Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Located 23 km away from Entebbe, Ngamba Island is a chimpanzee sanctuary for over 40 orphaned chimps. Numbers may continue to grow because of the illicit trade of chimps. Luckily enough there is an organization like the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and wildlife trust (CSWCT) an NGO that has taken it upon themselves with the support of donors to provide exceptional care to the chimps.
Chimps are fed four times a day on the Island. Seeing the chimps feed is a humbling experience, seeing the animals request food and take their time eating, in a manner very similar to human beings. Indeed they are man’s closest relatives, sharing 98.7% of our genetic blueprint. You will have the chance to meet Medina the chimp artist and other chimps with interesting stories.
If you have more time, spending a night at the island is an additional experience. You will also add another trip to Bulago Island famous for its Pineapple bay resort (luxury). Or you could go to Koome Island for bird watching.
There are only 2 shifts in which the boats cruise visitors to the island: at 9-10am and at 12-1pm (local time). It is therefore important you book in advance to avoid missing out because only a few visitors are allowed.
Volunteering
Volunteer programs are also available at the Island and other natural habitats in western Uganda. This program gives you a first-hand insight into the conservation activities of these endangered species. This enables you the visitor to further educate yourself and the public about the importance of chimpanzee conservation.
Fishing is another exciting experience for those whose enjoy an hands on experience.
