The Big Seven in Uganda the Pearl of Africa
Uganda is gifted by nature. It is home to the big 5 animals that also roam other East Africa wildlife parks such as the African elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros and Cape Buffalo. The Pearl of Africa is not only home to the Big 5 animals but the Big 7.In addition to the traditional Big 5,the Pearl of Africa is home to the Mountain Gorilla and Chimpanzees.
Mountain Gorilla
Uganda’s highly endangered mountain gorillas. To see them you have to endure a challenging trek through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It is worth it when you finally see them.
Hippopotamus
In Uganda they can be spotted in the waters in Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park in large numbers. Remember to look out for them on a boat cruise.
Rhinoceros
The Rhino species of Black and White rhinoceros were present in Uganda – the Eastern Black in the North and Northwest, and the Northern White in the Northwest on the west bank of the River Nile. After the years of civil unrest, and poaching the rhinos became extinct. However with renewed efforts to bring them back into Uganda, the white rhinoceros can be found at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Leopard
These expert predators are relatively difficult to spot as they are good at staying silent and camouflaging in their habitat. Most commonly sighted in Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Pian Upe game reserve and Kidepo National Park.
African Elephant
African Elephant populations continue to grow in Uganda’s national parks. Thanks to the renewed efforts of Uganda Conservation Fund and government of Uganda. The sight of these large animals on a game drive is a truly a breathtaking experience.
Lion
Lions are captivating creatures to watch especially when seen in a pride. It is more interesting if you so them going in to catch their next prey in the wild.
Chimpanzee
Chimpanzees are usually playful creatures in the forest. It’s exciting to watch them swinging and playing in the forest canopies.
